Have you ever wondered what the secret is to sounding confident?

Have you ever looked at a famous singer, speaker, or actor and thought “They must have been born with that talent? I could never do that? I’m not that confident.”

Many people think that the reason someone wins an Oscar, or an Olympic Gold Medal, is talent, but what they may not realize is this: Success in any form is just a combination of a learned skill AND talent and this powerful combination will enable you to fulfil your dreams.

In this blog, I am going to show you the secret to vocal confidence in just 5 steps so that you can combine both your natural talent and skill with active learning.

Every high performer starts with some talent, for sure, and that gift helped them choose their path in life but after that choice was made, a coach taught them everything they know in order to win or succeed. To do that, they had to learn something.

What we are really talking about here is claiming your own power as a human being and learning how to fully express the best version of yourself. Some call this Vocal Empowerment. I call this Vocal Confidence.

The problem is speech is simply a habit. Usually, we form not very good ones. Most of us just talk without thinking too much about it. People don’t even know that they actually have a choice around how they want to be perceived as a speaker, and regarding that perception, whatever someone thinks about you may or may not be true but unfortunately, we live in a society where perception is reality. It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not, if you or they believe it to be so.

An interesting thing I learned recently is this: In life, we only ever have only 2 choices: Choose to do something or choose Not to do something. Whatever choice you make in life, I want you to ask yourself this: Will this choice empower me or disempower me?

I can tell you that these 5 steps will EMPOWER you to become a more confident person and speaker.

STEP 1:  ALIGNMENT OF A KING      .

When you stand in a way that makes you feel more confident, you are going to be perceived as confident before you even open your mouth. If you stand simply like this: shoulders up, back down. Have a confident open stance. Open chest. Open throat chakra. Weight over the arches of your feet. You need to stand in that 6-point alignment balance so you cannot be swayed.  Do 1 simple exercise that will make you feel more powerful and more uplifted. Take a pretend silver thread and pull the thread all the way up to the middle of our core, all the way up to the top of our head and then stand tall and strong. Feel the upward lift out of your rib cage. You will notice if you have the alignment of the king, what the people will notice about you is the body language of confidence.

STEP 2: POP INTO GRATITUDE

Put your hand on your heart. Feel the vibration of love and gratitude when you’re speaking. Whenever you open your mouth, you need to pop into that vibration of love. It’s the strongest vibration in the universe. It can transcend space and time and if you allow yourself to feel love and gratitude for being on this earth, you will feel a sense of calm washing over you. It worked for me and it can work for you.

STEP 3: LET GO

Let go of control. Let go of judgement. Let go of fear, just for a moment, and let all your muscles relax into that upward, powerful position…the alignment of king. Make sure the muscles are relaxed. Open your jaw and let a nice, relaxing breath out. After letting go, I want you to focus on your content. I want you to focus on serving somebody. I want you to focus on that love vibration and bringing that forward to the people you are speaking with. This is part of let go and serve.

STEP 4: BREATH

Take a deep diaphragmatic breath and let the sound move forwards and away from you towards the walls of the room you are standing in. When we move airflow powerfully forward, we use our voices in a very different way. The thing that holds people back is the tension pattern we have in our voice. When you open that throat and take a nice diaphragmatic breath, you need to have your voice riding on a beautiful stream of air. Let out a huge loud sigh and feel the power of sound travelling up and out of the throat and across the other side of the room. The act of deep breathing helps in every facet of life. It helps us focus, stay calm, stay in control when we need to, helps us stay grounded, and helps our voices be very powerful. When you ride the voice on that breath, the voice will sound strong, the throat open and you will reach a resonance sound that moves forward. Feels good, doesn’t it?

STEP 5: SLOW DOWN

When we take the time to do all these steps, we are going to naturally slow down and calm the nervous system. And that helps especially when we take a full second breath in between sentences. If we take a nice full diaphragmatic breath in between sentences, we’ve got plenty of time to think, to be inspired, and to become a better version of ourselves. Let’s face it, that’s what it’s all about. Everything we do in life is expressed by the power of sound, by the power of our voices. Our voice, our communication skill will make or break our life and our career. Life and love are expressed through the power of sound.

So, I want to inspire you today to use these 5 simple steps of grounding and calming yourself so you can become the person you are called to be in this world.

Who have you come here to be?

Once you have learned and practiced this 5-steps, I want you to go out and inspire someone else to do the same.

Do not forget: Speak up. Speak out. Be ready to be heard because remember: YOUR VOICE MATTERS.
