Let’s face it, if you feel more comfortable with the way that you sound, you will get more out of life because you will speak more, share your message with the world more and be more confidently.

The reason people get such a shock when they hear their voice back on recordings is that when we experience voice, we feel the bone conduction in our heads. We feel the vibration as well as hear it or speak it out however when others hear us, they only hear the vibration as it travels from your mouth to their ear and that’s a completely different experience. So, the trick I’m going to tell you is how to change the position of your voice box at will to change the quality of your sound. So, if you have a high-pitched voice or a weak boring voice, you can play with your instrument to see which larynx position works the best for you. As singers and speakers, we can change the position of the larynx anytime we want. This will change the sound that others hear as well. For example, Shakespearean Actors use a wide-open throat and a dropped larynx position to keep a stable, projected tone when speaking in the theatre specially since they have no amplification. Opera singers use their muscles in a very similar way.

Do you hear how simply lowering the larynx and widening the vocal tract can alter your sound? Dropping the larynx makes a huge difference. We can do this trick anytime we want. You just have to do a little bit of work.

Let’s try it together in an exercise so you can feel it and hear it for yourself. Are you ready? Let’s channel our inner Morgan Freeman, shall we?

Step 1: Using High Larynx     .

With high larynx, we are going to use this simple English phrase: “Around the rugged rock, the ragged rascal ran”.

To get your larynx into a high position, put a little happy smile on your face and take in a breath of surprise. Place your fingers around your voice box so you can feel it move upwards when you do that little smile.

Step 2: Track and Measure: How does it feel? How does it sound?

Pretend you are 5 years old with a very high, bright and child-like larynx/tone and say the phrase. It should be easy to produce and bright sounding and very young. You see a small voice box gives a small and bright sound. So of course, the younger you are, the higher your pitch. The smaller your voice box, the smaller, higher and brighter the sound.

Step 3:  With a Low Larynx

This time let’s try the same phrase with a low larynx. First Place your fingers around your voice box and do a big yawn. You should feel the voice box drop down to a low position. You can also get the same effect by using this trick: simply lower your jaw and dip your tongue. When your jaw is lowered and your tongue is flat across the bottom of the mouth, as in the AH sound in English, we naturally get a lowered larynx as well.

Step 4:  Track and notice: How does it feel? How does it sound?     .

You will notice that it sounds very different and a little harder to produce. You have to work hard because the larynx is heavy and low. It takes more muscle effort and concentration. But if you sound too high when speaking normally, you might want to play with this trick and lower the larynx a little bit to see if you can improve the quality and color of your sound

So, there you have it, one simple the 5 keys to cure breathing issues naturally and help you sound less nasally when you speak.

Do not forget: Speak up. Speak out. Be ready to be heard because remember: YOUR VOICE MATTERS.
