INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES:ย

ย

FULL VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

The first step we need to take is this:ย  To understand the way we sound in our head is different from the way that other people hear usโ€ฆย

The reason is this: Bone conduction.ย

ย When we are speaking, we feel vibration and sympathetic resonance inside our head and our body when we make sound.ย The bone, cartilage and muscle vibrate with the moving air and we feel the sound as well as hear it. So, we experience sound in a very different way from what others hear.ย

To get clear feedback on our actual sound, we need to keep recording, listen to it back, adjusting our sound and repeat. Once you do this a few times, you will get the hang of what you need to change.ย

Here are some tips to get you on the right track:

______________________________________ย

#1:ย  CHECK YOUR AIRFLOW ย ย  ย  ย ย .

Free flowing air when you speak helps you sound more relaxed, rich and pleasant. When the air is flowing out of your mouth like a colorful wave of sound towards your listener, it will make your voice sound more pleasing to the person listening to you.ย This right airflow will sound beautiful and relaxed but the wrong airflow will make you sound breathy and weak.ย So, listen back and decide whether you need more air or lessโ€ฆย ย

Let me give you two clear examples here for guidance:ย

  • Using way too much air is not good enough to project and very difficult to speak for long periods of time as it’s tiringย
  • Using not enough air will make my throat muscles have a strangling sound. Doesn’t sound good and certainly doesn’t feel good either. Itโ€™s too tight.ย

So, get the balance right, and this will improve your sound.ย

#2: CHECK YOUR RESONANCEย  ย ย

Resonance is something that many people don’t understand.ย Actors and Singers call this USING THE MASK.

When we speak in that forward way using the natural cavities of the face and sinuses, the sound resonates around these spaces and rings with a brighter and richer sound.ย

This balanced sound is easier to project and very relaxed sounding to the listener. There is nothing annoying about a balanced sound.ย

#3: FLOW SPEAK ย

This method shows you how to speak as though you are singing. When we are singing a beautiful song like Edelweiss, we make every sound connect one to the next. When we use this idea in speaking, I call this Flow Speak. One of the reasons some people culturally have a choppy sounding or harsh voice, is simply because they don’t allow the sounds to flow effortlessly between consonants and vowels.ย When there is a choppiness to the voice, it can add a harsh edge and make it annoying and predictive. So, instead of chopping up the sounds with too many breaks, lets flow it all together.

So, try these 3 tips for yourself and see what you need to improve in your own voice.ย

  1. Airflowย
  2. Resonance
  3. Flow Speakย
