Ok… you asked for it, so here it is: The 5 keys to fixing breathing issues and nasality… naturally.

Just a few years ago, I felt so miserable I just wanted to die. No seriously, it was that bad. I had allergies, asthma, hay fever, sinus problems… you name it. The good news is: I have fixed all those issues naturally so I figure, if I can do it, you can do it too.

If you suffer from a blocked nose, a nasal voice or a deviated septum, then this blog is for you.

SUMMARY

A nasal voice can be very annoying to an audience. It can either make you sound too superior and as though you have an ‘attitude’ or it can make you sound gluggy and sick… neither leave a good impression.

So, here in this blog are 5 simple steps you can take to help reduce or even cure your blocked nose if it’s due to underlying health issues, like mine was.

1. How to keep a journal to track your diet and lifestyle habits?
2. How to steam correctly and use heat to alleviate sinus pain?
3. Which natural supplements help with a blocked nose?
4. Which nasal sprays are the best long term, and safe?
5. How to do the ancient art of alternative nostril breathing

These simple steps helped me go from being blocked up and miserable most of the time, to clear and strong instead!

I suffered for decades with breathing issues myself and that’s one of the reasons I did two Holistic health degrees back-to-back – to find the answers to my own health and wellness issues. For me, breathing issues, blocked nose and sinus were the biggest issues that nearly ruined my life. I even had surgery to fix a deviated septum and so did my mum, but neither of us improved dramatically, so eventually I turned to natural remedies instead.

Here are 5 key things that worked for me:

1. Food Journal    .

Keeping a food journal is super important and the very first thing you need to do. Most breathing issues are actually allergy related or at least allergies play a big part of it. So, the first thing you need to do is find out when your nose is more blocked. Grab a small notepad and a pen and take it with you everywhere! Every time you eat or drink, write it down. Then an hour, later go back and write down how you feel. Take the following down into consideration: Are you feeling sleepy? Is your pulse rate speeding up? Is your nose more blocked? Do you feel more mucus in your nose or throat? Once you get a handle on what is affecting your body, you can start to eliminate those foods from your diet, or at least minimize your intake! I highly recommend getting a food tolerance allergy test commonly called an ELISA test in the US to find out any surprising foods you may need to cut out. You may be allergic to some foods or at least sensitive to them.

2. Steam and Heat Packs

This was a complete surprise to me as a singer because when you have serious sinus issues, I used to put ice on my head. It’s the worst thing you can do for a sinus headache! When you have a sinus pressure headache and a blocked nose, the quickest way to get the blockage moving is with heat and steam! Definitely not ice! Yep, these things are my new best friends: Stanley the Steamer and a heat pack. When you are really blocked up, you need to steam at least 3-5 times per day and when you have the time, lie down and place the heat pack on your face and over your sinuses for at least 10 minutes. Then after that, go for a fast walk to keep the breathing passages clear and the air flowing thru the nose. Believe me, you will feel like a brand-new person!

3. Serapeptase

This little enzyme changed my life. When all the doctors and specialists I had seen over 3 decades and 3 continents couldn’t fix my issue with drugs or surgery, I took things into my own hands and went to a Naturopath. My Naturopath recommended this enzyme to me. It is a natural enzyme that specifically helps break down the fibrous webbing that is all throughout our sinus cavities. When the webbing gets too thick, it can trap mucus and bacteria and eventually will turn into an infection and that’s what makes us so sick. It is really hard to believe, but it really worked so well for me. When I get the slightest start of a blocked nose or a sinus issue, I take the enzyme immediately multiple times per day and its totally gone within 24 – 48 hours. Believe me, when I’m searching up a product to purchase, I read dozens and dozens of reviews to make sure most people are satisfied with it. I’m not a doctor and I can’t prescribe anything for your individual needs. This is your personal choice. So have a look at the product and see for yourself if it sounds like a good product for you. Do the research and make up your mind.

4. Natural Nasal Spray     .

I take a natural spray but most doctors and allergy specialists will prescribe you a medicated nasal spray to keep your symptoms at bay. But nearly all these medications have a rebound effect. That is, after 3 days of taking them, you get worse! You get more blocked up than ever and then NOTHING will unblock your nose. So, please read the labels carefully and don’t take the medicated ones past the prescribed date.  Do some research and find out which is the best one for you. The one that I use is called XLEAR. It contains grapefruit seed extract, saline solution and xylitol. Grapefruit seed extract, or GSE, is known to kill bacteria so when you spray it, it will help you do two things: Stop infection before it gets too bad and prevent the infection from taking hold in the first place. I use it as a preventive and cure for blockages. This spray, with the Serapeptase, is a powerful combination that really changed my life. I couldn’t breathe out of my nose at all until I was about 26 years old. I was miserable. Nowadays, I can breathe all the time. 99% of the time, I can breathe from both sides of the nose even though I have a deviated septum.

5. Alternate Nostril Breathing

An allergy specialist taught me this technique as a kid, when I was really sick to really help me cure my mouth breathing and improve the airflow into the nose. I found out, many decades later, that Ayurvedic medicine is also used as a spiritual practice to help balance both sides of the brain and help you remain calm and focused. So double whammy for us!

Here’s how you do it: To make it really simple, instead of the traditional way of using the 2 thumbs, I am going to use the 2 pointers. You are going to close 1 nostril and breath in thru the other side then close the other nostril and breath out thru the alternate side. Then you breath in thru the same nostril, covering the other side, and breath out using the other side. Once you do that for a few minutes, you actually feel calmer and breathe better.

When I was a kid, I didn’t know why my doctor was telling me this because I couldn’t breathe at all. He made me force air into my nose even though, at that time, it didn’t like feel it was going to move at all. I’ve been doing that most of my life, now I do it as a spiritual practice as well as a breathing exercise.
